3. Book of the week

What truly motivates us to learn, grow, and excel?

According to Daniel H. Pink’s book, Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, the key isn’t external rewards like grades, money, or praise, (referred to as "carrots and sticks")—it’s something much deeper. Pink identifies three core drivers of motivation that align with the Feldenkrais Method: autonomy, mastery, and purpose.

1. Autonomy: The Freedom to Explore
Autonomy is the desire to direct your own actions and choices. In the Feldenkrais Method, this principle is central. Rather than rigid instruction, Feldenkrais lessons encourage you to explore movement in your own way, fostering curiosity and personal discovery. Pink’s research shows that when we feel empowered to make choices, we are more engaged and motivated—a lesson you experience firsthand every time you’re invited to “create options, reduce effort or find an easier way” in a Feldenkrais class.

2. Mastery: The Joy of Progress
Mastery is the drive to improve at something meaningful. In Feldenkrais, small, mindful improvements in movement lead to profound changes in how you feel and function. Pink explains that people thrive when they work in their “Goldilocks zone”—tasks that are challenging but not overwhelming. This idea mirrors the Feldenkrais principle of working with what’s possible and gradually expanding your abilities, step by step.

3. Purpose: Connecting to Something Bigger
Purpose is the feeling that what you’re doing matters beyond yourself. Feldenkrais isn’t just about moving better; it’s about living better. Whether it’s gaining ease in daily activities, enhancing your creative pursuits, or simply finding joy in movement, this sense of purpose fuels your practice. Pink argues that when we connect our actions to a meaningful goal, our motivation becomes limitless.

Why It Matters
Pink warns that relying too much on external rewards—like “doing it right” or impressing others—can actually stifle creativity and intrinsic motivation. Instead, the Feldenkrais approach nurtures internal drivers, encouraging self-awareness, curiosity, and a love for learning. By embracing autonomy, mastery, and purpose in your Feldenkrais journey, you’re not just learning to move better—you’re tapping into what truly motivates you to grow and thrive.

4. Quote of the week

“The goal of education, if we are to survive, is the facilitation of change and learning. The only person who is educated is the person who has learned how to learn; the person who has learned how to adapt and change; the person who has realized that no knowledge is secure, that only the process of seeking knowledge gives security. Changingness, a reliance on process rather than on static knowledge is the only thing that makes any sense as a goal of education in the modern world."
— Carl Rogers
