The Feldenkrais Method
When asked to describe his method in one sentence, Feldenkrais said: “Know thyself.”
The method is about changing habits and improving movement organisation, but it is also about the mental and emotional self-awareness that this process can bring.
Movement, thought, sensation, and emotion are intricately connected. They form the core components of who we are and of everything we do. Improve the way you move, and you may also change the way you feel, the way you think, and the way you sense and perceive the world and yourself.
How do you improve the way you move?
Feldenkrais lessons use many different strategies: guiding attention toward different sensory aspects of a movement; exploring coordination, timing, and relationships between different body parts; using small and slow movements to enhance sensitivity and the processing of sensory information; systematically varying the orientation in which a movement is done; challenging balance in order to improve balance; using active imagination and visualization; and many other learning strategies.
