In the first part, David Kaetz will explore the theme of improving hearing through embodied listening. While the ear’s tiny structures are vital, listening involves much more—it is a holistic process that integrates movement, breathing, attention, attitude, context, relationships, and all the other senses, much like vision.

In the second part, Alan Fraser will demonstrate his work with classical pianists and violinists, showing how changes in physical organization can transform an instrumentalist’s sound and enhance their performance.

In the third part, Sofie Van den Eyden, a lute player, will share how she incorporates strategies from the Feldenkrais Method into her approach to teaching music, fostering deeper learning and expression.

The event will conclude with a Q&A session with Alan Fraser.

The Body as an Instrument - An Introductory Series for Musicians

“Improvement of talented people comes through their awareness of themselves in action. Their talent arises from their freedom to choose their modes of action.” (M. Feldenkrais)

Musicians engage in repetitive movements and can greatly benefit from learning to adapt their posture, both dynamically and according to the situation. Through heightened awareness of themselves while playing their instrument, they can experience an increased level of sound production, optimise dexterity of their technique and create a higher level of differentiation.

This week’s ATM lessons is specifically designed for musicians. The teacher is a violin player himself, so some of the lessons will even be touch upon string-instrument-specific issues.

All of the lessons will help any musicians experience easy, efficient and flowing movements, by exploring coordination and how to optimize the musculoskeletal system while working with your instrument. Through the playful discovery of your own possible diversity of movement, you learn to relieve tension by fully taking advantage of the skeleton in the gravitational field.
